Alabama Gang: Erwin alum Todd Foster, a NASCAR mechanic, says he’s known by diehard fans.
Todd Foster wasn’t a sports star in his days at Erwin High School.
“I didn’t do many sports growing up at all,” he said. “I did a year or two of football and a year or two of baseball when I was younger.”
But he never suited up for the Eagles who called Center Point home.
“We were always racing Friday nights, Saturday nights and sometimes on Sundays,” Foster said. “I started finding I enjoyed that instead of playing a sport.”
The 1989 Erwin alumnus may not have played a sport in high school but he may be the most successful former Eagle who is making his living in a team sport. Foster is a mechanic for the No. 20 car on the Joe Gibbs Racing Team driven by Joey Logano.
Patsy Howle is generally recognized as the most knowledgeable historian of Erwin High, which was replaced during the 2011-12 school year by Center Point High. When asked about the most successful Erwin product in professional team sport, her initial response was DeMarcus Cousins, the basketball player who left Erwin for Clay-Chalkville before finishing his prep career at LeFlore.
