Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion, qualified 10th for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway, leading the Team Penske charge. Logano turned a lap of 75.081 seconds in the final session to grab the 10th position.
Logano clocked in the fastest lap time in the first session, breaking the old track record with a lap of 74.472 seconds on his second run of the day. Unfortunately, Logano couldn’t back the time up in the final session and had to settle for 10th.
“I’ve probably won more first rounds than anybody and only have one pole to show for it,” said Logano. “I obviously had a good first round and was the fastest car there, but in the second round I went up the hill and starting going through one and the car was freer, so I thought, ‘OK, I can haul the mail up this corner pretty good,’ and as soon as it compressed I lost the nose and missed the inside of that corner, which makes the next corner sharper, so I lost quite a bit there. I felt I pretty much maintained through the rest of it, but at that point you’re just on damage control and ended up 10th. It’s just a bummer. Tenth is about where we were in practice, but when you win the first session all of a sudden you think you can go for the pole and I just overdrove it.”
