No. 20 Dollar General Toyota News & Notes:

  • DOLLAR GENERAL READY FOR DEGA: Dollar General will continue their Sprint Cup Series sponsorship of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. It will be the fourth race of the season that Dollar General has sponsored Logano in the Sprint Cup Series as the 21-year-old has already run the Dollar General Toyota at Las Vegas, California and Texas this season. Dollar General also serves as a sponsor on the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Brian Scott and as a part-time sponsor of the No. 18 and No. 20 Toyotas driven by Logano and Denny Hamlin.
  • FROM SMALL TO LARGE: Last weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series raced at one of the series’ smallest tracks, the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway. This coming weekend, Logano and the rest of the Sprint Cup Series stars will head to the largest track on the schedule, the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. Talladega has become a fan-favorite over the last several years for its dramatic and largely unknown style of both big pack and two-car tandem racing.
  • STATS TELL THE TALLADEGA TALE: There are two tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule that stand out in the stat column on Logano’s resume and Talladega Superspeedway is one of them. Since beginning his Sprint Cup Series career full-time in 2009, Logano has competed in six events at Talladega and has earned an impressive four top-10 finishes in those six starts, including two top-fives (a third in the fall race of 2009 and a fifth in the fall race of 2010). In fact, of all active Sprint Cup Series drivers, Logano has the best-average career finish at Talladega – 14.5 – and is fourth in driver rating (a formula combining the following categories: Wins, Finishes, Top-15 Finishes, Average Running Position While on Lead Lap, Average Speed Under Green, Fastest Lap, Led Most Laps, Lead-Lap Finish) with an 88.6.
  • LOGANO AGAIN HELPING AIDB: Logano will once again be supporting the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and their annual “Race Fever” program this Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. AIDB is the official charity of the Talladega Superspeedway and every year, Race Fever is held at the SPEED Channel Dome at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Race Fever proceeds benefit the AIDB Foundation with over 1,200 fans from across the United States enjoying a Southern barbeque dinner, bidding on distinct items in the live and silent auctions and vying for the chance to meet their favorite drivers. Despite missing last year’s event due to the severe storms that went through Alabama the night of Race Fever, Logano plans to be present this year from 6:30 – 7:15pm. For more information on the event, visit www.racefever.org.
  • HONORING OUR EVERY DAY HEROES: Throughout 2012, Dollar General, along with its vendor partners, will celebrate and recognize its customers through the Honoring Our Every Day Heroes program. During the month of May, the theme is celebrating Moms who do extraordinary things every day for their families and communities. • THIS WEEK ON THE NO. 20 DOLLAR GENERAL TOYOTA: Dollar General vendor partners Hefty Reynolds, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Hanes, Clorox and Tide will be featured on Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 Toyota Camry this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.
  • THE RACE: The Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway (Talladega, AL; 2.66-mile oval) is set for Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2012. The race will be broadcast on FOX at 12:00 p.m. ET, with radio coverage on MRN.

From the Cockpit:

Joey Logano Quotes: “Talladega is one of my favorite tracks and a track that I’ve done pretty well at in the past. I’m not exactly sure why, but I feel like I’ve understood drafting really well and I’ve always been able to understand where and when to make the right moves and what to do. Granted, restrictor-plate racing is a crap-shoot and you can have the fastest and best car out there and still get taken out in an accident that you had nothing to do with. You definitely feel like you are not completely in control at Talladega and a lot of the times just along for the ride until the finish.

“It takes a special type of driver to do well there. You need to be patient and need to be precise. You have to know that making one little mistake could cause a lot of problems for a lot of people. Then near the end of the race, you need to be aggressive and get yourself in a position to win the race. That is key to these restrictor-plate races now is getting yourself in the right position with about five or six laps to go. If you are not in the right position, you aren’t going to have a shot to win. Then if you have yourself in the right place, you go for broke those last couple of laps and hope someone is working with you to get you to the front. That is the hardest thing really is getting hooked up with someone for the end and knowing that you two are going to be the cars pushing each other to the finish. Do you push to help someone else win or do you leave them hanging to possibly try and get the win yourself and maybe lose some spots? It’s a big game for sure.”
